When surveyed about what would be needed for national school health guidelines to be implemented, school health practitioners responded that a solid foundation of policy is critically needed.
Without commitment at the highest level of school leadership, implementing a well-coordinated school health program is difficult. Resources are available to assist districts in establishing effective policies that should reap short-term benefits for student learning and long-term benefits for public health.
In Oklahoma
Tahlequah, OK
In August 2002, the Tahlequah School District became the first in Oklahoma to remove soft drinks from all vending machines. A local dentist's letter urged the school board to take action to protect student health. It prompted the medical community to rally – and the school board came through with real change.
El Reno, OK
In 2002, El Reno Schools began providing nutrition info for all cafeteria menu items -- both online and along the serving line, so students can learn along the way.
The School Lunch Institute offers computer programs that make it easy to access and store nutrition information.
Potawatomi Nation
Eastern Oklahoma, Adair County

What worked: A “total environment” approach addressing four influences: | Menus
| | Vending machines
| | Mandated physical education
| | Community service: engaging children in their community produces what many students later see as their “most memorable” experience |
