Childhood obesity has become a crisis in Oklahoma.
Hours spent in front of television and computer screens mean kids are not getting enough exercise. This, coupled with lousy eating habits, has created a "supersized" problem. We've got to get moving!
SB 312 supports schools in growing healthy minds AND bodies. SB 312 does the following:
 | Directs the State Board of Education to require schools to offer physical education instruction for students at all levels.
| | Elementary Schools must require a minimum of 60 minutes average per week of physical education or exercise program in grades K-5.
| | Middle and High Schools must offer physical education as an elective. |
Childhood obesity is a societal problem. Parents, pediatricians, schools and communities can all make positive contributions to address the challenge. In 2005, the Oklahoma Fit Kids Coalition will focus on schools, where children spend so much of their days, and where life-long habits are being set. SB 312 is a step in the right direction.
