Legislative Update

Updated 6/30/06

Farm to School (HB 2655) passed and was signed by the Governor on June 7, 2006.
SB 1459 also passed through the legislature.
SB 1461 was not heard on the floor of the House, so after passing through the Senate and House Committee, was not voted on and ultimately died.

Fit Kids has had a very successful legislative year, and we will continue to hold strong at the legislature, ensuring healthy and fit kids for Oklahoma's future.  Thank you to the many committed partners who continue to work hard for Oklahoman's children, youth and families.

Our remaining bills, SB 1459 and SB 1461, passed the Full Senate on March 8, 2006. SB 1459 passed unanimously (46/0) with the title restored - meaning that if it passes the House with no new amendments, it can go straight to the Governor! Our other bill on fitness testing had a bit of opposition. SB 1461 passed 34/12. The opponents are mainly those who advocate for local control of school districts. So we'll have some work do to on this one!

All four of our Fit Kids bills have now passed the midway point in the session, meaning they have all passed their original committees and gone on to pass their full floors. The bills now "cross over" to the opposite chamber (the House bills with go to a Senate committee, and the Senate bills will go to a House committee).

Congratulations to one and all!
