Problem: Schools can help students in setting the course for a healthy lifestyle, yet their sites may not provide all the tools students need to make healthy choices. The Healthy & Fit School Advisory Committees were created through legislation in 2004 to help parents and schools assess their campuses and make recommendations for improvement. However, little guidance and/or resources were provided to assist the committees in completing their tasks.

Solution: SB 1459 provides assistance for the Healthy & Fit School Advisory Committees to make their assessments and create a School Wellness Policy. It provides the means for districts to combine their federal requirement with their state requirement to create a wellness policy for the committees.
