What Obesity Is Not

It's not an aesthetic issue. The human body comes in all shapes, but excess weight is a clinical medical disease that causes numerous other physical and mental illnesses. In children, its debilitating effects are often compounded and more severe.
Child obesity: Not parents’ fault. Our consumption-driven culture of abundance and entitlement is so pervasive, it often overwhelms a parent’s ability to counteract.
Not primarily due to human weakness. Experts believe America needs to agree obesity is an epidemic resulting from external forces (our environment). It cannot be the result of a “sudden upsurge in moral failure” nor change in our gene pool.

Therefore, a vital foundation for policy development will be public recognition of genetic and environmental factors as major contributors to obesity.

Effective messages (about external contributors to obesity) would increase public support for obesity-related public policy.
