Saint Francis Health System, 2005 - 2006
FOUNDING PARTNER
“In response to our Tulsa community needs assessment and rising epidemic of childhood obesity, the Saint Francis Health System is pleased to announce its support and membership in the Oklahoma Fit Kids Coalition as Founding Partner of the Northeastern Oklahoma chapter. Together, we hope to develop practical legislative and program interventions to combat this growing trend and to provide tools for both parents and their children to make changes that will lead to a healthier lifestyle.”
The Daily Oklahoman
“As a state newspaper, The Oklahoman has a valuable opportunity to directly impact the health and wellness of all children in Oklahoma. By publishing information on healthy lifestyles, good nutrition, and physical fitness, we can provide a voice in the fight against childhood obesity”, states David Thompson, publisher, The Oklahoman.
The Chickasaw Nation - 2004
Citizen Potawatomi Nation - 2004
The Citizen Potawatomi Nation stepped forward with vital early support for this cause. Bill Thorne, Director of Health Services, Citizen Potawatomi Nation, is a founding member of the Fit Kids Coalition, and an experienced advocate for child health. He sees restoring a physical education requirement for Oklahoma schoolchildren as an urgent priority.
American Indians are acutely aware of the child obesity epidemic. Statistically, they are among the most vulnerable population groups. Before the 1930s, diabetes was virtually unknown to American Indians; today, they face a risk of contracting the disease five times greater than the general U.S. population.
