You can make a difference by speaking out about your support for all Fit Kids measures. Some ideas:
Write letters to lawmakers and school decision makers. E-mails and phone calls are also effective.
Urge your State Senator and House Representative to support SB 265 and SB 312
Find phone numbers/e-mail addresses for all State Senators and House Representatives at the State Legislature’s Web site: http://www.lsb.state.ok.us/ and click "Senate Members" or "House Members."
You can also use this site to first identify your representatives.
Congratulate Oklahoma leaders who pledged support of the Fit Kids Coalition. For contact information, click the above Web site link.
Governor Brad Henry
Lt. Govenor Mary Fallin
State Senate President Pro Tempore Cal Hobson (D-Lexington)
State Superintendent Sandy Garrett, (State Deptartment of Education)
Urge as many legislators as possible to support legislation for healthy kids
Letters, e-mails and phone calls all help win and reinforce support:
Senate Switchboard: 405-524-0126
House Switchboard: 405-521-2711
Urge decision makers on school vending machines and school nutrition to support the Fit Kids Act.
Decision makers and influentials include school board members, superintendents and principals; school dieticians and foodservice managers.
Remember: Oklahoma schools are underfunded
So, reassure them our recommendation is not to remove vending machines but to simply switch unhealthy soft drinks, candy and snacks with healthy snacks and beverages. This move will protect the profits they earn.
Let us know about any organized effort to send a large number of letters in support of Fit Kids Legislation.
For example, INTEGRIS physicians recently sent letters to more than 5,000 school board members from 541 districts across the state.
Write letters to Oklahoma media, either congratulating them for supporting Fit Kids or urging them to do so on their editorial page or newscast editorial. Letters to the Editor can also be invaluable.
Just a few examples of early support (for which we're sincerely grateful) are:
TULSA WORLD, 1-18-04, Opinion feature article by Julie DelCour
KOTV News Segment
The media can be invaluable in "keeping up the heat" by applying pressure, reporting on status quo or changes, and urging parents to engage.
Write letters encouraging community groups to embrace the Fit Kids Act.
Virtually any civic organization has a vested interest in protecting children's health. Chambers of Commerce, Rotary Clubs, foundations, etc., should all support this action.

The Fit Kids Coalition is working on a videotape to show PTAs and other community groups. In the meantime, simply presenting information from this site will make an authoritative and persuasive presentation.
